Renowned indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has just premiered his latest film, Father Mother Sister Brother, at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, where it garnered an impressive six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation. This innovative triptych marks a significant moment for Jarmusch, who is competing for the first time at the festival; his previous work, Coffee and Cigarettes, was screened out of competition back in 2003.
In a video shared by Deadline, Jarmusch was seen celebrating with his cast after the screening, basking in the enthusiastic applause from the audience. Father Mother Sister Brother delves into the intricate dynamics between adult children, their somewhat aloof parents, and the relationships among siblings. Each of the film’s three chapters unfolds in the present day and is set in a different country, showcasing Jarmusch’s storytelling prowess.
Written and directed by Jarmusch, the film boasts a stellar cast that includes Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, and Françoise Lebrun. The film is produced in collaboration with Mubi, Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, and The Apartment (a Fremantle Company), along with Jarmusch’s badjetlag and Gillibert’s CG Cinema, Cinema Inutile, Films du Losange, and Weltkino.
During a press conference earlier today, Jarmusch addressed questions regarding Mubi’s controversial relationship with Silicon Valley private equity firm Sequoia Capital. He is among many filmmakers who have signed an open letter urging Mubi to return a $100 million investment from Sequoia, which supports various Israeli defense-tech startups. Jarmusch stated, “My relationship with Mubi began long before this situation, and they have been wonderful partners on this film. I was certainly disappointed and troubled by this relationship. However, if you want to discuss it further, I suggest you reach out to Mubi directly. I don’t speak on their behalf.” He emphasized that it’s not fair to place the burden of addressing Mubi’s financial sources on the filmmakers themselves.
In summary, Father Mother Sister Brother is a compelling addition to Jarmusch’s filmography, exploring the complexities of family relationships through a global lens. With its strong performances and thought-provoking themes, the film is set to resonate with audiences and critics alike.
