Javier Bardem Stands with Film Workers for Palestine: A Call for Accountability
Javier Bardem is making headlines for his strong support of the Film Workers for Palestine initiative. In a recent statement to CNN, he emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, "We do not discriminate against any person based on their nationality, race, religion, or gender. Discrimination in any form is unacceptable, and we have consistently reiterated this stance." Bardem stressed that the focus is on holding corporations and institutions accountable for their complicity in the humanitarian crisis affecting the Palestinian people in Gaza and the illegal settlement activities in the West Bank.
In early September, over 3,900 leaders in the film industry signed a pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions and companies that are perceived to be involved in actions against the Palestinian people, including genocide and apartheid. This notable list of supporters includes acclaimed filmmakers and actors like Bardem, Yorgos Lanthimos, Ava DuVernay, Adam McKay, Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, and many more.
Recently, U.K. Lawyers for Israel issued a warning to major entertainment companies such as Netflix, Disney, Amazon Studios, Apple, and Warner Bros. Discovery. They argued that the boycott could violate the U.K.’s Equality Act, potentially affecting their financing and insurance. The letter highlights that the Equality Act 2010 serves as crucial legislation in the U.K. against racism and discrimination. It warns that collaboration with actions contrary to this legislation could result in serious repercussions for these organizations.
In response, Warner Bros. released a statement asserting its commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace. The studio expressed that participating in the boycott would likely violate their internal policies, which prohibit any form of discrimination, including that based on race, religion, or nationality. "While we respect the rights of individuals to express their views, we will continue to align our business practices with our policies and legal requirements," the statement read.
Bardem has been a vocal advocate for peace and justice in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. During a recent appearance at the 2025 Emmys, he elaborated on his decision to support Film Workers for Palestine. "I stand here today denouncing the genocide in Gaza," he stated. He referenced the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS), which has officially classified the situation as genocide. Bardem called for a commercial and diplomatic blockade, along with sanctions on Israel, to help put an end to the violence, concluding with a powerful message: "Free Palestine."
