Japan Named Country of Honour at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film
Exciting news from the Cannes Film Festival: Japan has been announced as the Country of Honour for the 2026 edition of the Marché du Film, set to take place next May. The announcement was made by Guillaume Esmiol, Executive Director of the Marché du Film, during a special event at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). Junichi Sakomoto, Chair of the Executive Committee for Japan, Country of Honour 2026, also joined in making this significant reveal.
This announcement was initially hinted at during the opening night of TIFF, generating anticipation for the detailed plans that will unfold throughout the festival. As the Country of Honour, Japan will take center stage by co-hosting the Marché du Film’s Opening Night and participating in various programs, including panels, networking events, and project showcases. The focus will shine brightly on Japan’s renowned animation and genre cinema.
Key initiatives will include a summit dedicated to Japan’s film industry, aimed at fostering collaboration and innovation, as well as a special screening day devoted entirely to Japanese cinema. Through its involvement, Japan aims to establish robust professional networks within the international film community while promoting its film and content industries for future success in global markets.
With a rich filmmaking history spanning over 120 years, Japan stands as one of the most influential nations in cinema. Legendary filmmakers such as Kenji Mizoguchi, Yasujirō Ozu, and Akira Kurosawa—who won the Cannes Palme d’Or in 1980—have laid a foundation for contemporary talents like Hirokazu Kore-eda, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and Naomi Kawase, along with emerging creators such as Chie Hayakawa, all contributing to Cannes’ Official Selection.
The Marché du Film highlighted Japan’s thriving film industry, which produces approximately 1,200 films each year and attracts around 150 million moviegoers, generating an impressive gross of $1.3 billion. This resilience demonstrates the industry’s adaptability in an era dominated by digitalization and an increasing array of entertainment options.
Japan’s close relationship with the Marché du Film is evident, as Japanese sales companies are among the most prominent participants at the Palais des Festivals. The Japan Pavilion, coordinated by UniJapan, has long been a staple at the Village International.

The Executive Committee for Japan, Country of Honour 2026, along with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), will organize Japan’s participation. More specific program details and a list of participating institutions will be announced in early 2026.
Japan follows Brazil (2025), Switzerland (2024), Spain (2023), and India (2022) as the fifth Country of Honour, a prestigious initiative by the Marché du Film to celebrate nations for their exceptional contributions to the global film industry and to promote international exchange and collaboration.
