Jannik Sinner Withdraws from Shanghai Masters Due to Severe Cramping

In a surprising turn of events at the Shanghai Masters, Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner was forced to retire from his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor due to debilitating cramps that left him barely able to walk. The 24-year-old reigning Wimbledon champion struggled through intense physical challenges, ultimately conceding the match in the third set.

The match started off well for Sinner, who faced a tough opponent in Griekspoor. After a hard-fought tiebreaker, he managed to clinch the first set. However, the tide turned in the second set when Sinner appeared to sustain an injury while returning serve. Despite showing initial signs of recovery, Griekspoor seized the opportunity to level the match.

As the decisive third set progressed, Sinner’s condition worsened significantly. He was frequently bent over in pain, battling severe cramps that severely compromised his mobility. This allowed Griekspoor to win points simply by returning serves, as Sinner struggled to move along the baseline. Although a physiotherapist attempted to provide relief with a brief massage, tournament regulations prevented a full medical timeout.

Upon trying to rise from his chair, Sinner experienced renewed cramping, which ultimately forced him to retire from the match. Griekspoor expressed sympathy for his opponent in his post-match remarks, stating, "This is definitely not the way you want to win. The conditions in Shanghai have been brutal all week." He went on to wish Sinner a speedy recovery.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Griekspoor acknowledged Sinner’s impressive performance, particularly during the tiebreak. "He played an unbelievable tiebreak, and there wasn’t much I could do," he said, reflecting on the role of luck in his advancement.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic has emerged as the primary contender for the title following his earlier victory over Yannick Hanfmann. The seasoned Serbian managed to secure a three-set win, although he too faced physical challenges during the match. Djokovic was seen struggling with the extreme humidity, even vomiting during a changeover. He commented on the harsh conditions, emphasizing the brutality of playing in over 80% humidity day after day.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Djokovic, who is in pursuit of his first title since winning the US Open in 2023.
