As DC Studios gears up for the highly anticipated launch of its new Superman film, directed by James Gunn, set to premiere on July 11, the studio is determined to avoid the pitfalls that have affected its rival, Marvel. The DC Universe is rich with iconic superheroes, and among them, the Caped Crusader stands out as a focal point. Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, acknowledges that Batman presents a significant challenge for the new cinematic landscape.

In a candid Q&A with Rolling Stone, Gunn addressed the future of Batman and the potential for Robert Pattinson’s portrayal to join the newly established DC Universe alongside the David Corenswet-led Superman. “We’ve considered it,” Gunn stated, emphasizing that while there’s a possibility, it’s not something they’re actively pursuing at this time. “I wouldn’t say it’s impossible, but it’s unlikely,” he added. Gunn also clarified that the sequel, Batman Part II, is not canceled, despite rampant speculation. “We don’t have a script yet. Matt Reeves is taking his time, and that’s okay. Let him do his thing,” he expressed, defending the creative process and encouraging patience from fans.

Meanwhile, Gunn is collaborating on another Batman project titled The Brave and the Bold, which is still in development and will be directed by Andy Muschietti. This film aims to explore the relationship between Batman and his son, a storyline inspired by Grant Morrison’s acclaimed comic run. “Batman is my biggest challenge right now,” Gunn admitted. “While I’m not writing the script myself, I’m working closely with the writer to ensure we get it right. Batman is crucial to the DC Universe, just like Wonder Woman.”

Gunn emphasized the importance of creating a unique and compelling version of Batman that fits seamlessly into the new DCU. “We can’t just make a Batman movie because he’s a major character for Warner Bros.,” he explained. “There has to be a clear reason for his presence in the DCU, and he needs to be distinct from Matt Reeves’ interpretation. I’m not interested in a campy version of Batman; I want to explore a more serious and nuanced character.”

As development continues, Gunn is optimistic about finding the right approach to bring this iconic superhero back to the big screen in a meaningful way, ensuring that Batman remains a vital part of the evolving DC Universe.
