James Gunn Reveals Surprising Inspirations for the DC Universe: Game of Thrones Takes Center Stage
In a recent interview with Omelete, James Gunn shared insights into the creative vision behind DC Studios and the expansive DC Universe, revealing that its primary inspiration isn’t the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but rather the acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones and its source material, A Song of Ice and Fire.
Gunn emphasized the unique narrative style that sets the DC Universe apart from the MCU. "Game of Thrones, not just the show but the books, is what we’re using as a reference for the DCU," he stated. "The DCU is not the MCU. The MCU is built around familiar cities like New York, featuring superheroes in a recognizable world. In contrast, the DCU presents a distinct universe—slightly different and transformed."
In addition to Game of Thrones, Gunn mentioned that he draws inspiration from other iconic franchises, particularly Star Wars. He admires how these stories interweave multiple narratives within the same universe, allowing for a rich tapestry of storytelling. "I also draw a lot of inspiration from Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and other series that explore various stories within a shared continuity. It’s not about focusing on just one storyline," he explained.
Fans can look forward to experiencing Gunn’s vision firsthand when he introduces the inaugural film of the DC Universe, Superman, set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
