Exploring "Sanatorium": Ireland’s Official Entry for Best International Feature at the 98th Oscars

"Sanatorium," a poignant documentary directed by Gar O’Rourke, delves into the unique stories of an ex-Soviet wellness resort in Ukraine. This remarkable film has been chosen as Ireland’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, as announced by the Irish Film and Television Academy.

This year’s selection comes on the heels of Ireland’s historic nomination last year with "The Quiet Girl," marking the first time an Irish film received recognition in this prestigious category. Despite the accolades, Ireland has yet to secure a win for the international Oscar. The previous entry was "Kneecap," directed by Rich Peppiatt.

The film’s synopsis captures its essence: “Patients and staff alike are on a quest for health, happiness, and love, all while the echoes of the ongoing war in Ukraine resonate through the vibrant lime green corridors of Kuyalnyk Sanatorium.” Each summer, the sanatorium welcomes thousands of visitors of all ages to its sprawling ex-Soviet treatment center located in Odesa, on Ukraine’s southern coast. The facility, a time capsule from the 1970s with its distinctive brutalist architecture, continues to offer therapeutic treatments reminiscent of the Soviet era. Notably, the sanatorium is famous for its mysterious mud, believed to cure infertility, chronic illnesses, and a host of other health issues.

However, "Sanatorium" goes beyond mere physical healing; it explores the deeper human desires for happiness and love. Through the lens of cinematographer Denys Melnyk, O’Rourke poignantly captures the personal stories of the guests, transforming the documentary into a heartfelt tribute to the resilience and spirit of the Ukrainian people.

Produced by Venom Films, with contributions from IFTA-winning filmmakers Ken Wardrop and Andrew Freedman (known for "His & Hers" and "Making the Grade"), along with Samantha Corr, "Sanatorium" is co-produced by 2332 Films Ukraine. The film received support from Screen Ireland, BBC Storyville, MetFilm Sales, France TV, and Creative Europe. Editing was handled by John Murphy, who previously worked on "An Cailín Ciúin," with Denys Melnyk serving as director of photography.

Irish audiences will have the opportunity to experience "Sanatorium" when it premieres in cinemas across Ireland on September 5. The film made its World Premiere at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, competing in the main international category in March before embarking on its festival journey.

With its captivating storytelling and cultural significance, "Sanatorium" not only represents Ireland at the Oscars but also serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
