Andreas Schjelderup Addresses Legal Issue Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Norwegian international footballer Andreas Schjelderup has publicly acknowledged a legal issue he faces in Denmark stemming from an incident during his teenage years. The 21-year-old Benfica winger took to social media on Saturday to discuss the situation, describing his actions as a “stupid mistake” made when he was just 19 and playing for Nordsjaelland in the Danish Superliga.

The timing of Schjelderup’s statement is particularly sensitive, as he has just been named in Norway’s 24-man squad for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Italy. Norway is vying for a spot in the tournament for the first time since 1998, making his recent announcement all the more significant.

In his statement, Schjelderup explained that he received a video from another person and, without fully understanding its contents, forwarded it to a friend. He admitted to only watching “the first few seconds” before deleting the video when he learned about its inappropriate nature. Schjelderup acknowledged that sharing such material is illegal under Danish law and expressed his willingness to accept the consequences.

“I take full responsibility for my actions,” Schjelderup stated. “What I did in Denmark was illegal and not acceptable. I sincerely apologize to those affected by the video, as well as to my friends, family, employers, country, and all the fans I have disappointed. I wish I could go back and change my mistake.”

He emphasized that this incident does not define his character. “The offense I will be convicted for does not reflect who I am as a person or what I stand for. I have never been in trouble with the law before, and I have been in shock over this situation. I am prepared to face the consequences.”

While he did not disclose specific details about the video, Schjelderup mentioned that it involved “what looked like two young men in a low-quality video.” He urged others to refrain from viewing or sharing harmful content, highlighting the significant impact such materials can have.

Reports from Danish media indicate that Schjelderup is scheduled to appear in court later this month, where he expects to receive a suspended sentence based on legal guidance for the offense. Benfica president Rui Costa has publicly stated that the club will support Schjelderup throughout this legal process, and he has been in communication with the Norway national team staff.

Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken expressed his confidence in Schjelderup’s growth from this experience. “He has admitted to the incident and is taking responsibility for his actions,” Solbakken said. “Although he has made a serious mistake, I believe he has learned from it and will not repeat it. This is a challenging time for Andreas, and we aim to provide him with the support he needs as he joins the team.”

Schjelderup acknowledged the potential distraction this situation could pose for Norway as they prepare for critical matches. “I understand that this might cause an unnecessary disturbance for the national team during a pivotal moment in our history,” he said. “I had hoped to address this after the games to minimize the impact, but unfortunately, that is no longer possible.”

As it stands, Norway leads their qualifying group with two matches remaining, and the team is focused on securing their place in the World Cup.
