The highly anticipated first College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings have officially been released, showcasing the reigning champions at the top. The Ohio State Buckeyes claimed the No. 1 spot in the projected 12-team bracket unveiled by ESPN on Tuesday night. After their impressive victory over Notre Dame in the championship game earlier this year, the Buckeyes have maintained a flawless 8-0 record this season, solidifying their position as favorites.
One of the most exciting narratives this season revolves around the No. 2 ranked Indiana Hoosiers. Under the guidance of head coach Curt Cignetti, the Hoosiers have made a remarkable start, boasting a perfect 9-0 record and leading the Big Ten, thanks in large part to the stellar performance of Heisman candidate quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

Completing the top four seeds, which will enjoy a first-round bye in the CFP, are No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 4 Alabama. The SEC continues to showcase its strength, with Georgia entering the rankings at No. 5, followed closely by Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels at No. 6.
The top 10 rankings feature BYU at No. 7, leading the Big 12 with an unbeaten 8-0 record, followed by Texas Tech, Oregon, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 10. Despite starting the season with two losses against Texas A&M and No. 18 Miami, Notre Dame has bounced back with six consecutive wins as an at-large team.
The Miami Hurricanes, despite sharing the same loss count as Notre Dame, faced a recent setback with an overtime loss to SMU, impacting their ranking.
Just outside the top 10, Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns sit at No. 11 after a victory over No. 16 Vanderbilt, while the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners are also in the mix. Virginia, leading the ACC, enters the rankings at No. 14, highlighting the dominance of Power Four conference teams in the top 25.
This season’s CFP format introduces a straight seeding model, differing from previous years. The top four teams, regardless of conference, will receive a first-round bye. If the rankings hold, Memphis, the top Group of Five team, would face Georgia, Virginia would take on Ole Miss, Notre Dame would meet BYU, and Oregon would square off against Texas Tech.
As the first of many rankings, this initial lineup sets the stage for an exhilarating season ahead. The final bracket will be determined on December 7, following the conference championship games.
