In the touching Netflix film "Nonnas," inspired by Joe Scaravella’s beloved Staten Island restaurant Enoteca Maria, Vince Vaughn portrays Joe, a man driven to open a restaurant after the passing of his mother. He believes that through food, he can preserve her memory, encapsulating the sentiment that “food is love.” This profound connection to family and tradition resonates not only on-screen but also off-screen among the cast, which includes renowned actresses like Susan Sarandon, Brenda Vaccaro, Talia Shire, and Lorraine Bracco, alongside Joe Manganiello and director Stephen Chbosky.
Liz Maccie, the film’s writer, shared her inspiration during the movie’s premiere, stating, “I was drawn to the heart and kindness of the story. Growing up in an Italian-American family in New Jersey, food was our language. Creating a film that celebrates love, tradition, and legacy felt like a perfect fit.”
The strong bonds shared between characters captured the attention of stars like Sarandon and Manganiello. Sarandon expressed her excitement about working with such a talented group of women, stating, “Ensembles are special, and this film is about family. We really formed a family throughout the process.” Manganiello, who plays Joe Scaravella’s best friend, was equally enthusiastic, citing his admiration for Chbosky and Vaughn, as well as the unique opportunity to portray an Italian character in a comedic role. He appreciated the film’s exploration of male friendship and humor, particularly how his character’s playful interactions with his on-screen wife, played by Drea de Matteo, added depth to the story.
The camaraderie among the cast extended beyond the set. Manganiello reminisced about a memorable evening spent at the real Enoteca Maria, where he and Vaughn connected with Scaravella and his staff while enjoying a homemade dinner prepared by the nonnas. “It was a blast hanging out with them and hearing their stories,” he recalled.
As for Netflix, producer Rachel Shane emphasized the importance of the platform in reaching a wide audience. “We wanted as many people as possible to see this film,” she explained. “It delivers a message of family, community, and second chances, especially for older women. Netflix truly embraced our project.”
Bracco, who had an uplifting reunion with her colleagues at the premiere, described her experience working on "Nonnas" as a “lovefest.” She portrayed Roberta, a character whose journey of self-discovery unfolds in the kitchen alongside her fellow chefs. Despite her initial hesitations, Bracco noted that the relationships formed through food brought them closer together.
Throughout the film, the nonnas’ relationships with their families are intricately explored. Maccie intentionally crafted their storylines to highlight the theme that family extends beyond blood relations; it includes those with whom we share meals and moments. She noted, “Family is not just about lineage; it’s about the connections we make with others in our lives.”
Chbosky echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that women, especially those of a certain age, should be seen for their roles beyond traditional family dynamics. “We wanted to shift the focus to their individual identities,” he explained. Sarandon also spoke to the significance of honoring the wisdom and traditions of older generations, highlighting the void left by the absence of grandmothers in family homes.
At the premiere, Sarandon, known for her outspoken views, wore a pin supporting the Palestinian cause, reflecting her commitment to social issues. When discussing her hopes for the future, she expressed a desire for peace and liberation in the Middle East.
Chbosky also touched on the film’s core message of respect and understanding, noting the diverse political opinions within the cast and crew. “Despite differing views, there was a sense of mutual respect among everyone, which is what our film is ultimately about,” he said.
The genuine respect that Scaravella had for his patrons was evident when Sarandon sought a last-minute reservation at his restaurant. Despite the challenges, Scaravella ensured that his regular customers were prioritized, showcasing the heart of the community that "Nonnas" aims to celebrate.
