Red Bull Team Principal Responds to Verstappen’s Comments on Car Performance
Laurent Mekies, the principal of the Red Bull racing team, has pushed back against Max Verstappen’s claim that the team has little chance of securing a Grand Prix victory under normal circumstances as the season progresses. Verstappen finished ninth at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, prompting his remarks.
“It was a challenging weekend,” Mekies stated while addressing Verstappen’s concerns. “I believe this weekend doesn’t accurately reflect the true performance of our car. We acknowledge that we may not excel on circuits like this one, but what we witnessed today was remarkable.”
He added, “There’s no denying that McLaren outperformed us, but take a look at Spa—Max was able to compete fiercely, even surprising everyone during the Sprint race. So, let’s keep our hopes up.”
Mekies emphasized that the season is still lengthy, stating, “Even though car development may slow down significantly from this point onward, there’s still plenty for us to learn, as this weekend has demonstrated. It’s during these tough and uncomfortable moments that we truly grow and improve. It’s better to encounter these challenges early in the season.”
He remains optimistic about the team’s potential, concluding, “If we can harness insights from weekends like this, we should be able to extract more performance from the car and enhance our competitiveness in future races.”
