Ben McDonald, Former Orioles Star, Shares Recovery Journey After Serious Deer Stand Accident

In an emotional social media update, Ben McDonald, the Baltimore Orioles’ No. 1 overall pick from the 1989 MLB Draft, disclosed that he sustained significant injuries after falling 25 feet from a deer stand. The former pitcher shared a video from his hospital bed, reflecting on the incident and the injuries he endured.

"This is what a severe concussion looks like, and frankly, I still don’t remember much," McDonald posted on X (formerly Twitter). "I apparently fell out of a deer stand 25 feet high yesterday morning. I’m okay and grateful for everyone who reached out. I’m very lucky to only have a concussion and two cracked vertebrae. I’ll be back in #Birdland soon to call Orioles games. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, and a big shoutout to the medical team. See you all soon!"

An avid hunter, McDonald previously shared his love for the outdoors in a December post where he reminisced about his late father. He described a poignant moment while hunting, reflecting on the cherished memories spent together in nature.

"I normally don’t share too much on social media, but this is too good not to share," he wrote. "I lost my dad in January, and sitting in a bowstand for the first time without him gave me a moment to reflect. I was talking to him about how much I miss him and appreciating all the sacrifices he made for our family. Just five minutes after I dried my tears, an enormous buck appeared, and I was able to make the shot. This moment felt like divine intervention, and I will always remember this as #PawPaw’s Buck."

Ben McDonald shone as a star pitcher at LSU before being drafted by the Orioles. Over his career, he maintained a 3.91 ERA with 894 strikeouts across 211 games, eventually finishing with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1997. Currently, he serves as a color commentator for MASN and contributes to the Orioles’ radio broadcasts.
