Henry Golding on the James Bond Role: A Dream or a Nightmare?
For actor Henry Golding, stepping into the iconic shoes of James Bond might feel more like a daunting challenge than a thrilling opportunity. At the recent premiere of The Old Guard 2 in Los Angeles, Golding shared his thoughts with People, revealing his mixed feelings about the legendary character. “I think that’s every actor’s kind of nightmare,” he remarked, especially in light of Denis Villeneuve being appointed as the new director of the Bond franchise, marking a significant shift under Amazon MGM Studios.
Golding continued, expressing a desire for innovation within the franchise. “At the same time, you want to introduce something fresh. Why not explore more agents or additional OO’s? That could be far more exciting, as it would break the existing constraints and expectations,” he suggested. The star of Crazy Rich Asians candidly added, “Maybe I’m just being cautious. But I believe I would enjoy it much more without that looming cultural pressure.”
Following Villeneuve’s announcement as the next Bond director, speculation about the next actor to portray the iconic spy has intensified. Currently, it is known that Tanya Lapointe, Villeneuve’s artistic partner and wife, will co-produce alongside Amy Pascal and David Heyman.
Villeneuve himself shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Some of my earliest movie memories are tied to 007. I grew up watching Bond films with my father, starting with Dr. No featuring Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan, and to me, this character represents sacred territory. My goal is to honor that legacy while paving the way for exciting new missions ahead.” He expressed his excitement about the responsibility, saying, “This is a massive honor, and I’m incredibly thrilled about what lies ahead.”
