Emma Thompson Recalls a Surprising Date Proposal from Donald Trump
In a fascinating revelation, Emma Thompson shared her experience of receiving a date invitation from former President Donald Trump. "One day, the phone rang in my trailer, and to my surprise, it was Donald Trump on the other end. Initially, I thought it was a prank. I asked, ‘How can I help you?’ thinking he was looking for direction. Instead, he said, ‘I would love for you to stay at one of my beautiful properties, and we could have dinner together.’”
Thompson humorously noted, “On that very day, my divorce had just been finalized. I can’t help but think he has people scouting for attractive divorcees—after all, he managed to find my trailer number! That’s borderline stalking! So yes, I could have been on a date with Donald Trump, potentially changing the course of American history!”
Known for her sharp wit, Thompson has never shied away from political humor. She recalled her early days as a comedian, quipping, “I used to make jokes about Margaret Thatcher and herpes. They’re both notoriously hard to get rid of! It’s a timeless comparison.”
Thompson also reminisced about her creativity, revealing, “I wrote a series of comedy sketches, one involving a Victorian woman visiting her mother, only to discover her husband has a ‘small creature’ attached to him. Of course, she was referring to his penis. It highlighted sexual ignorance with humor. Interestingly, the producer of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ saw one of these sketches and thought, ‘This woman can adapt Jane Austen!’ It was an unexpected turn.”
Despite her successful career, Thompson admitted she originally had no desire to pursue acting. “Acting seemed like a precarious profession. I once met a hospital administrator who came to our school, and I thought, ‘Now that’s a stable job!’ Mostly because she wore such lovely shoes.”
However, acclaimed roles in films like “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” soon followed. For her performance in the latter, she drew inspiration from her grandmother and the concept of “intergenerational trauma.” She explained, “My grandmother was never truly happy or fulfilled, which deeply influenced my portrayal of Miss Kenton.”
Thompson’s career also intersected with significant historical events. Reflecting on the Monica Lewinsky scandal during the production of “Primary Colors,” she said, “We found ourselves in the midst of creating a film about a contemporary issue. It feels like ages ago, and oh, how I wish we could have just a lighthearted sex scandal instead of all this drama!”
Recently, Thompson received the prestigious Leopard Club Award at a festival, expressing her astonishment and joy. “I was nearly in disbelief—I was so happy!” she recounted, reminiscing about a particularly crowded screening of Brian Kirk’s film “Dead of Winter.” “Most of the women I know are incredibly heroic, and seeing a character who is older and grieving is something I haven’t encountered often before.”
Through her candid reflections, Emma Thompson continues to inspire with her humor, creativity, and insightful perspectives on life and her illustrious career in Hollywood.
