The LACMA Art+Film Gala 2023 was a dazzling showcase of Hollywood’s elite, solidifying its reputation as one of Los Angeles’ premier events. Held on Saturday night, the gala drew a star-studded crowd including Elle Fanning, Kaia Gerber alongside her mother Cindy Crawford, music sensation Lorde, and acclaimed actresses Angela Bassett and Cynthia Erivo. Other notable attendees included Samara Weaving, Benito Skinner, Tessa Thompson, Emma Roberts, and Paris Hilton, all gracing the red carpet in stunning attire.

This year’s fundraiser honored visionary filmmaker Ryan Coogler, known for his work on “Sinners,” and talented visual artist Mary Corse. The night was highlighted by an unforgettable performance from Doja Cat, who captivated the audience with her musical prowess.

During the gala, Ryan Coogler received his honor from Angela Bassett, delivering a heartfelt speech that paid tribute to his late friend, social justice advocate Michael Latt. Latt, tragically killed during a home invasion in 2023, was the son of Michelle Satter, founding director of the Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program, and producer David Latt. Coogler shared, “Michael was changing the world,” reflecting on their friendship and Latt’s impact.

Coogler also reminisced about his journey into screenwriting, revealing that he never envisioned himself as an artist. “I was a football player before anything,” he explained, recalling how he was encouraged to write screenplays while attending USC on a football scholarship. He expressed feeling out of place when he first arrived in Los Angeles, missing his community in Oakland, California. Yet, he affirmed, “This place became a second home for me. I made memories here. I made friends here.”

The LACMA Art+Film Gala, co-chaired by Leonardo DiCaprio and Eva Chow and presented in partnership with Gucci, aims to enhance the museum’s programming by integrating film into its curatorial initiatives. The gala supports the institution’s broader mission, which includes exhibitions, acquisitions, educational programming, and film screenings that explore the rich intersection of art and cinema.
