Sean Baker Discusses His Upcoming Film and Commitment to Independent Cinema
Filmmaker Sean Baker has exciting news for fans of his acclaimed film Anora and his previous works: expect “more of the same” from his next project. In a recent appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast It Happened in Hollywood, Baker reassured listeners that he won’t be trading his indie roots for a blockbuster Marvel film anytime soon.
Baker, whose film Anora made waves by winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes and six Academy Awards—including a record four Oscars for himself—shared that he is taking his time to select his next venture. When asked about his upcoming film, he stated, “I’m still exploring some ideas. I’m not sure yet.”
He firmly ruled out the possibility of directing a Marvel film, saying, “Don’t expect a Marvel film. It’s not going to happen. I’m committed to staying within the same realm and sticking to a similar budget. I truly enjoy working in the independent space.”
While many indie filmmakers, such as James Gunn, Taika Waititi, and Chloé Zhao, have made the transition to big-budget franchises, Baker prefers to maintain his independence. He emphasized, “I’m not working for even a mini studio. I’m making my film independently and following the traditional route of hoping for a bidding war or licensing deal.” He believes this approach allows him to retain full creative control over his vision, stating, “Expect more of the same.”
A passionate advocate for independent cinema, Baker delivered an inspiring speech at the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards. Upon receiving the award for Best Director, he remarked, “I’m an indie film lifer. Some of us want to create personal films meant for theatrical release—projects that big studios wouldn’t greenlight. We seek total artistic freedom and want to cast the right actors for the roles, not just those who can draw in box office numbers or have large social media followings. The system must change, as this is simply unsustainable.”
