Donald Trump’s Controversial Refugee Policy Cuts: A New Low in U.S. Foreign Policy
Former President Donald Trump is facing significant backlash after his administration announced drastic cuts to the number of refugees allowed into the United States. The cap has been reduced from 125,000 to just 7,500, with particular emphasis on prioritizing white South Africans. This new quota for the 2026 fiscal year has been described in a government notice as being “justified by humanitarian concerns or otherwise in the national interest.”
This sharp decline not only marks a significant reduction from the 125,000 figure established by President Joe Biden’s administration last year, but it also falls short of the 15,000 refugee limit set during Trump’s first term in 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Refugee rights advocates have been quick to condemn this decision. Uzra Zeya, president of Human Rights First, labeled it a "new low point" in U.S. foreign policy, while Sharif Aly, president of the International Refugee Assistance Project, accused Trump of "politicizing a humanitarian program."
In a notable confrontation earlier this year, Trump met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the White House, echoing claims made by entrepreneur Elon Musk regarding the alleged persecution of white farmers in South Africa. During this meeting, a video was presented that purportedly showed burial sites for murdered white farmers. However, it was later revealed that the footage was from a 2020 protest where crosses symbolized farmers killed over several years. The South African government has strongly denied allegations of persecution against Afrikaners and other white South Africans.
Additionally, in January, Trump suspended the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, citing a need to prioritize national security and public safety. During the Oval Office discussion, President Ramaphosa expressed hope that Trump’s administration would consider the perspectives of South Africans on this pressing issue, noting later that there seemed to be “doubt and disbelief” about the situation in Trump’s thinking.
As the debate continues, many are left questioning the implications of these policy changes on humanitarian efforts and the U.S.’s role in global refugee support.
