SPOILER ALERT: This article contains minor spoilers about “Weapons,” currently in theaters.

Zach Cregger’s sophomore film, "Weapons," dives into the eerie happenings of a small town besieged by a sinister force. The plot kicks off one fateful night when all the children from a particular classroom mysteriously vanish, leaving the townsfolk frustrated and the police baffled. The story unfolds through the perspectives of several locals, including troubled teacher Justine (portrayed by Julia Garner), cop Paul (Alden Ehrenreich), distraught father Archer (Josh Brolin), and a young burglar (Austin Abrams), as they become ensnared in the gripping mystery.

While Cregger refrains from divulging specific spoilers, he shares insights into the film’s unique blend of humor, gore, and the striking imagery of a floating assault weapon. He draws inspiration from Paul Thomas Anderson’s "Magnolia" for the film’s unconventional narrative structure. Cregger reveals, “I realized early on that Justine would not be the sole perspective of the story. I was eager to embrace a novelistic approach, shifting between protagonists while adhering to a personal rule: once I moved on from a character, their chapter was closed. It was a commitment that ultimately enhanced the film, even if it was challenging to maintain.”

Cregger also reflects on how the writing process served as a means to process grief following the loss of a close friend. “No, it doesn’t work that way,” he admits. “The absence remains, and while the sting may lessen over time, creating this film provided a constructive outlet for my feelings. Instead of succumbing to destructive behaviors, I channeled my anger through a character who struggles with her own demons.”

A particularly surreal moment features Archer dreaming of a massive assault weapon hovering over a house. “I cherish that moment because its meaning eludes me,” Cregger explains. “I enjoy that it can spark diverse interpretations—some may find it boring, while others might see it as a political statement, or simply as an intriguing visual. Its significance is open to personal reflection.”

Drawing from his comedy background, Cregger artfully incorporates dark humor throughout the film. “Humor should emerge organically from the situation rather than feel forced,” he advises. “Some of my clever jokes ended up on the cutting room floor because they didn’t fit the narrative. I’ve learned to let the story dictate the humor, ensuring that it serves the overall plot.”

Despite the film’s graphic violence, Cregger was able to retain his vision without significant cuts, humorously attributing this to the release of “Terrifier 3,” which set a new bar for grisly content. “While I didn’t quite achieve the level of brutality I aimed for, I’m still working on perfecting that balance,” he shares, referencing his previous film “Barbarian.”

Cregger expresses gratitude toward David Fincher, who provided invaluable guidance during the film’s development and post-production. “He was incredibly supportive, offering constructive feedback and insights that expanded my understanding of the editing process,” Cregger states. “His perspective on technical aspects and creative solutions opened my eyes to new possibilities.”

The film features performances that deftly navigate intricate tonal shifts. “I cast actors whose previous work demonstrated their ability to handle complex tones,” Cregger explains. “Josh Brolin can oscillate between humor and seriousness, while Julia Garner’s performance in ‘The Assistant’ showcased her incredible range. I was thrilled to assemble a cast of actors I deeply admire.”

Looking ahead, Cregger hints at the possibility of revisiting this universe. “I have another idea brewing that I’m excited about,” he reveals. “While it may not be my next project, I’d love to explore this world further down the line.”

As Cregger prepares for his upcoming "Resident Evil" film, he aims to honor the iconic game series. “The games have a unique pacing and storytelling style that immerses players in a terrifying journey,” he explains. “I want to craft a narrative that respects the lore while introducing a fresh story that resonates with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”

Stay tuned for more updates on Zach Cregger’s projects and the fascinating world of "Weapons"!
