Listen to Fox News Articles: Dallas Wings Player DiJonai Carrington Critiques Referees Over Security Incident
In a recent social media post, DiJonai Carrington, a player for the Dallas Wings, voiced her frustration regarding the referees’ decision to call security on her during a tense moment in a game against the Chicago Sky. The incident occurred during the Wings’ loss on Thursday, where Carrington’s heated exchange with officials escalated, leading security personnel to step in. One security guard even intervened by placing himself between Carrington and an official, who was seen retreating while holding onto the guard’s shirt for protection.
Carrington took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to share her thoughts, labeling the situation a “microaggression.” She expressed disbelief that security was summoned while she was merely trying to engage in a civil discussion with the referees. “Security… when I’m literally having a civil conversation is insane. Mind you, he called the ‘sEcUrItY’ over there…,” she tweeted, using a misspelled hashtag for emphasis.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the WNBA and the Chicago Sky for their perspectives on this incident.
Former Player Cheryl Swoopes Weighs In
Cheryl Swoopes, a former Dallas Wings player, also criticized the referee’s actions on X. She stated, "If this man was scared (of what, I don’t know) and needed security, he should NEVER be able to ref again! This can’t be real!"
A Controversial Past
Carrington has had her share of controversies in the WNBA. Last season, while playing for the Connecticut Sun, she was involved in an incident that left Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark with a black eye after inadvertently poking her during a playoff game. Despite the seriousness of the incident, Carrington was seen laughing with her teammate Marina Mabrey shortly after it occurred. She later claimed that she did not intentionally poke Clark and clarified that her laughter was not directed at the incident itself.
In an Instagram Live video from October, Carrington and her girlfriend, NaLyssa Smith, who plays for the Indiana Fever, appeared to make light of the eye-poking incident when Smith jokingly poked Carrington in the eye, leading to laughter between them.
Advocating for Change
Carrington has also been vocal about social and political issues. In January, she was spotted wearing a shirt that read "The F— Donald Trump Tour" while entering Wayfair Arena in Miami. During a press conference, she urged WNBA players to take action against the policies of former President Donald Trump, emphasizing the importance of advocating for women’s and LGBTQ rights.
“We see that some of the policies are already going into action, and, of course, that means that as the WNBA and being at the forefront of a lot of these movements, it’s time for us to also take action,” Carrington stated. “It definitely needs to happen as women, with women’s rights being taken away, and now, with LGBTQ rights being threatened.”
