Michael Smith Makes Emotional Comeback at Grand Slam of Darts
Michael Smith fought back tears during a heartfelt interview as he made his much-anticipated return to competitive darts following a challenging period of injuries. The former world champion faced Nathan Aspinall in his first televised tournament since the UK Open in March, competing at the Grand Slam of Darts.
In a rematch of the 2022 Grand Slam final, which Smith won, he claimed victory with a score of 5-3, despite Aspinall missing an astonishing 20 double attempts. This win was especially significant for Smith, who has battled numerous health issues over the past year, including arthritis affecting his throwing hand and complications with his foot, ankle, and shoulder. He also underwent laser eye surgery to improve his vision.
Smith’s return to high-level competition was deeply meaningful. In an emotional interview with Viaplay, he shared, "It’s been a long road, it’s been a battle." When asked about the challenges he faced, he replied, "Just everything; injuries, life itself. To get up there and win that match is a bit emotional, and I’m just glad to get over the line."
Reflecting on his performance, Smith acknowledged, "I can’t go worse than that. Nathan should have won that. I saw his reaction when he walked off." He admitted, "He should have won that 5-0, easy. I just hung in there and got the job done in the end."
When asked how he coped with his difficulties in recent months, he stated, "Yeah, it’s just fighting. I’ve always been a fighter, so to be back on stage and winning matches means the most to me." Emotionally, he added, "I just want to be competing. I’m sick of sitting at home watching people win tournaments while I’m sidelined. It frustrates me. But that’s life."
Michael Smith, a true competitor at heart, emphasized, "Winning matches is who I am. I’m not someone who sits at home. I thrive on being on the big stages and hearing the crowds."
The former world No. 1 reassured fans he has never considered quitting the sport, stating, "Not once. I made the semifinals of the UK Open with a hole in my leg. I broke both my hands at 19, had casts for five months, and within two weeks of getting them off, I won my first ProTour event. I’m a fighter, and I’ll be back—don’t worry."
Smith continues his campaign at the Grand Slam, set to face current world No. 1 Luke Humphries on Sunday, followed by his final group match against Alex Spellman. The top two players from the group will advance to the knockout stage, and Smith is determined to make his mark.
