Remembering "Papa Jake" Larson: A D-Day Hero and Social Media Sensation
Jake Larson, affectionately known as "Papa Jake," has passed away at the remarkable age of 102. A true D-Day veteran, he survived the perilous June 1944 landings in Normandy, where he faced German gunfire alongside nearly 160,000 Allied troops. In his later years, he captivated audiences on TikTok, amassing 1.2 million followers by sharing heartfelt stories that honored his fellow World War II soldiers and commemorated their sacrifices.
In a touching tribute shared on TikTok, his granddaughter, McKaela Larson, announced his passing. She revealed that he "went peacefully and was even cracking jokes until the very end." Expressing her gratitude, she said, "I am so thankful to have shared my Papa Jake with you all. You meant the world to him. When the time is right, I will continue to share Papa Jake’s stories and keep his memory alive. We appreciate all the kind words and posts. As Papa would say, love you all the mostest."
Born on December 20, 1922, in Minnesota, USA, Larson enlisted in the National Guard at just 15 years old, lying about his age to serve his country. By 1942, he was stationed in Northern Ireland, where he became an operations sergeant and played a crucial role in planning the Normandy invasion. His bravery on D-Day saw him land on Omaha Beach, where he narrowly escaped machine-gun fire.
Reflecting on his experiences, Larson told The Associated Press on the 81st anniversary of D-Day, "We are the lucky ones. We are their family. We have the responsibility to honor these guys who gave us a chance to be alive." His courageous service earned him the Bronze Star and the prestigious French Legion of Honour.
Through his TikTok posts, Larson masterfully blended humor with poignant reflections on the grim realities of war. Following his passing, numerous small-town museums and organizations in Normandy that honor D-Day veterans paid tribute to Larson, celebrating him as one of their most devoted visitors.
The Overlord Museum shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, stating, "He came every year to the museum, with his smile, his humility, and his tales that touched all generations. His stories will continue to live. Rest in peace, Papa Jake."
As we remember "Papa Jake" Larson, let us honor his legacy, share his stories, and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom.
