Ian Happ had a moment to forget during Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Chicago Cubs outfielder made a critical misstep in the first inning, but the Cubs ultimately celebrated a solid 3-0 win over their NL Central rivals.
In the game, Happ stepped up to lead off and hit a single to left field, setting the stage for what seemed like a promising start. However, things took a turn when Cubs right fielder Seiya Suzuki hit a fly ball to right field. As soon as the bat connected with the ball, Happ dashed from first base, thinking the play was in his favor.
Unfortunately for Happ, Cardinals outfielder Alec Burleson made the catch, forcing him to retreat to first base. Here’s where the trouble began: while running back, Happ bypassed a crucial rule. After reaching second base on his way to retreat, he failed to touch the bag again before returning to first.
Despite reaching first base ahead of the throw, the oversight led to him being ruled out, resulting in a double play that ended the inning.
This incident is a reminder that even seasoned players can make mistakes. Happ, now in his ninth season in the MLB — all with the Cubs — has been recognized as a three-time Gold Glove winner, showcasing his defensive prowess.
