Chris Pratt Returns as the Voice of Garfield in Upcoming Animated Sequel
Exciting news for fans of the beloved lasagna-loving cat! Chris Pratt is set to reprise his role as the voice of Garfield in Alcon Entertainment’s highly anticipated animated sequel to The Garfield Movie. This follow-up, based on the iconic comic strip created by Jim Davis, is being distributed globally by Sony Pictures, with the first film having achieved remarkable success, grossing over $260 million worldwide since its release in May 2024.
The announcement was made by Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. They revealed that Jim Davis, the mastermind behind Garfield, will serve as an Executive Producer for the sequel, alongside Bridget McMeel from Amuse. John Cohen, known for his work on The Garfield Movie, Despicable Me, and Angry Birds, will also produce the film, along with Steven P. Wegner and Alcon’s principals Kosove and Johnson. Notably, Pratt will take on a producer role as well.
This sequel promises to be a collaborative effort as Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios joins Alcon Entertainment in co-producing the film, with Malhotra also stepping in as a producer. DNEG Animation, the animation partner behind the success of the first film, will return to bring Garfield and his antics to life once again.
Producers are currently in discussions with potential writers and directors, and fans can expect more casting announcements to follow soon. Chris Pratt, who recently starred in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, previously lent his voice to the original Garfield movie. He also has upcoming projects, including Mercy, set to be released by Amazon MGM, and Way Of The Warrior Kid from Apple and Skydance.
The Garfield comic strip, which debuted in June 1978, centers around the hilariously cynical and lazy orange cat, Garfield, and his quirky interactions with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and their lovable dog, Odie. Initially appearing in just 41 newspapers, Garfield quickly gained popularity and has now become one of the most widely syndicated comic strips in the world, appearing in 2,580 newspapers and boasting an impressive estimated readership of 260 million.
Chris Pratt is represented by UTA, Rise Management, and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern, while Jeannette Hill, Executive Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs at Alcon Entertainment, negotiated the deal for the sequel.
