Former NFL Player Ramzee Robinson Sues Kansas City Chiefs for Discrimination
In a significant legal battle, Ramzee Robinson, a former NFL player and the Kansas City Chiefs’ ex-director of player engagement, has filed a lawsuit against the team, alleging wrongful termination and racial discrimination. This lawsuit was submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri on Sunday.
Allegations of Discrimination
Robinson claims that he was wrongfully accused of misconduct during a February meeting, where he was allegedly confronted about an incident involving a female colleague. He asserts that the Chiefs denied him access to security footage of the encounter, which he believes could have cleared his name. Ultimately, Robinson was dismissed from his role, which entailed managing locker room operations, providing mentorship, and other duties within the organization.
Salary Disparities Highlighted
The lawsuit also brings to light concerns regarding salary disparities within the franchise. Robinson states that he was earning a salary of $125,000, while his research indicated that similar positions at other NFL teams averaged $171,932, excluding additional benefits. Furthermore, he alleges that the Chiefs compensated African-American business employees less than their white counterparts.
Chiefs Respond to Allegations
In response to the lawsuit, Chiefs spokesman Brad Gee told The Associated Press that, while he cannot comment on ongoing legal matters, the organization does not tolerate discrimination in any form.
Robinson’s Background
Robinson has a long history with the Chiefs, having spent nine years in a front office position. Before his administrative role, he was the last player selected in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. Over his two-year playing career, he participated in 19 games with the Lions, along with brief stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, but he never played for the Chiefs.
