As reported, there has been a significant decline in crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding the influx of drugs into the United States, especially in Arizona, according to a high-ranking state official. One alarming method that drug cartels are using to transport narcotics is drones—a tactic that gained attention after bipartisan legislation in Arizona empowered law enforcement to shoot down these small aircraft.

Democratic Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes stated, “While we have gained more control over border crossings, the situation with fentanyl remains dire. Drug cartels are increasingly using drones to fly fentanyl across the Arizona border.”

Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, is being delivered into the U.S. via drones operated by these cartels. “I have advocated for legislation that enables local law enforcement to disable these drones, either by shooting them down or using drone jammers. This is a critical step that was long overdue,” Mayes emphasized. “The volume of drone incursions is alarming, sometimes reaching 50 miles into the U.S., which is simply unacceptable.”

She further highlighted the dangers posed by drones, stating, “These drones can carry not just fentanyl but potentially any type of contraband, as we’ve seen in various conflicts worldwide.”

Mayes has voiced her opposition to certain aspects of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, including the masking of ICE agents, which she believes fosters distrust. In terms of drug enforcement, she has requested additional resources, specifically 50 or more Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents, and has criticized proposed federal budget cuts to the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program.

“I need the federal government to step up and provide us with the necessary resources to combat these evolving cartel tactics,” Mayes stated.

In response to her request, the DEA highlighted their commitment to increasing personnel in Phoenix, a key area in the fight against drug trafficking. Special Agent in Charge Jarod Forget remarked, “We are actively adding more agents to our team, as Phoenix remains a top priority for our operations.”

While political perspectives on border security differ, some Republicans assert that the situation has improved. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell noted, “From January 2025 to June, we have observed a decrease in fentanyl cases in our office.” She added, “In 2022 and 2023, more than half of the fentanyl seized in the U.S. was confiscated in Arizona, making it a primary distribution point for the country.”

Mitchell continued, “The efforts made by the Trump administration to secure the border are essential in keeping Americans safe.”

Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls described the current situation in Yuma, located just minutes from the border, as “more peaceful.” The city previously faced resource strains during the border crisis but has since seen a decrease in crime and cartel activity. “There’s been no significant increase in crime over the last five years; in fact, we’ve experienced a decline,” Nicholls reported.

He explained, “While organized crime activity remains a concern in Mexico, it has not directly impacted our community. The changes within cartel leadership have led to violence across the border, but locally, we’ve felt minimal effects.”

Nicholls emphasized that the larger concern lies in drug trafficking. “The flow of drugs, including fentanyl and cocaine, is a national issue that affects us all.”

White House spokesperson Liz Huston stated, “Under President Trump, the southern border has never been more secure. Our administration is committed to restoring law and order, ensuring that dangerous cartel criminals are held accountable.”
