Harris English Set for Open Championship Amid Caddie’s Visa Dilemma

Harris English is gearing up to compete in next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush, but he may have to do so without his trusted caddie, Eric Larson. Larson is currently facing challenges in obtaining a new Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) visa required for travel to the U.K., a regulation that now impacts American citizens.

Larson’s background includes a significant legal issue from thirty years ago when he pleaded guilty to sending cocaine to friends in the Midwest. While he was neither a heavy user nor a major dealer, he served a decade in prison and was released from a halfway house in June 2006.

During a recent press conference at The Renaissance Club before the Scottish Open, English expressed his concerns about Larson’s situation. Larson was unaware of the ETA visa requirement until the U.S. Open, and his application was denied due to his past conviction. The U.K. government typically refuses visas to applicants with criminal records involving prison sentences of 12 months or more.

"I guess the United Kingdom doesn’t look highly on his past," English remarked. "And apparently it’s a work in progress."

English, currently ranked No. 19 in the world and 10th in the U.S. standings for the Ryder Cup, only learned of Larson’s visa troubles after tying for fourth at the Travelers Championship three weeks ago. In an effort to help, he contacted Warren Stephens, the U.K. ambassador, who connected him with his chief of staff.

"We’ve sent multiple letters," English noted. "The R&A, PGA Tour, and even a charity event Eric works with in the States, Operation New Hope, all wrote letters on his behalf. It’s not for lack of effort; I think it might just be sitting on someone’s desk somewhere in the government."

English and Larson have a history together, having worked together during the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, where Team USA achieved a decisive victory over Team Europe. This year’s Ryder Cup will be hosted at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.
