Bill Maher Calls Out Former ABC Reporter Terry Moran’s Social Media Rant Against Trump
In a recent episode of "Real Time with Bill Maher," the host addressed the controversy surrounding former ABC reporter Terry Moran, who faced backlash for his social media tirade against President Donald Trump and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. Maher expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that he expected impartiality from journalists like Moran.
During the "Overtime" segment, Maher remarked, "This guy’s a reporter, what the f—?" as he underscored the importance of neutrality in journalism. His guest, Ian Bremmer, added that while there are many roles where such opinions might be acceptable, journalism is not one of them.
On June 8, Moran labeled Trump and Miller as "world-class" haters in a now-deleted post. Following this incident, ABC News initially suspended Moran but later confirmed they would not renew his contract. A spokesperson for ABC stated, “We hold all of our reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness, and professionalism.”
In response to his firing, Moran announced that he would be joining Substack, where he has since published his first post, urging people to speak out against threats to democracy. He wrote, "We will lose this democracy if we do not use our voices."
Moran’s controversial comments stirred disappointment among his former colleagues at ABC News. One staffer expressed that while they appreciated Moran personally, his actions were detrimental to the credibility of the entire organization. “You tweeted something that hurt all of us. We don’t need this,” they said.
As the conversation around journalistic integrity continues, Maher’s comments highlight the critical expectation for reporters to maintain objectivity, especially in today’s polarized political climate.
