Max Verstappen Clinches Belgian Grand Prix Sprint with Defensive Mastery
Max Verstappen showcased an impressive defensive strategy to secure victory in the Belgian Grand Prix sprint race on Saturday, narrowly edging out Oscar Piastri after a decisive move on the first lap. Meanwhile, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton faced a challenging day, struggling after a disappointing qualifying session left them lower on the grid.
Piastri expertly navigated the initial corners, successfully fending off Verstappen’s advances at La Source and building a notable lead as the cars crested Raidillon. However, the aerodynamic advantage of Verstappen’s RB21, equipped with a sleek rear wing, allowed him to gradually chip away at Piastri’s hard-earned gap. Verstappen made a bold maneuver, overtaking Piastri on the outside of Turn Seven to take the lead.
For the next ten laps, Piastri remained within the DRS range of the leader but found it difficult to close the distance. That changed on lap 11 when Verstappen overshot the final chicane, compromising his exit and giving Piastri a chance. Although Piastri attempted to seize the opportunity with a daring move at Turn Seven, he was unable to make it stick, allowing Verstappen to maintain his lead.
In the battle behind the leaders, Lando Norris closed in on his teammate Piastri but could not mount a serious challenge. As the race unfolded, Verstappen’s defensive skill proved key in securing his sprint race victory, showcasing why he’s the reigning champion and a force to be reckoned with on the track.
