Wimbledon Commentator Andrew Castle Addresses Agassi Spat: “It Was Taken Out of Context”

This summer, Wimbledon commentator Andrew Castle found himself at the center of a heated exchange with tennis legend Andre Agassi during the men’s semi-final match between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. The incident occurred live on air while the camera captured celebrities in the Royal Box, leading to a moment of tension between the two pundits.

As Agassi, 55, attempted to provide an analytical insight into Fritz’s performance, he grew increasingly frustrated when Castle repeatedly interrupted him to highlight the high-profile attendees. Agassi quipped, “I can’t keep up with all the celebrities,” before losing his cool and stating, “People watching are watching for the tennis, not for this.”

This exchange quickly went viral, with many fans rallying behind Agassi’s perspective. However, Castle, 61, has since responded, asserting that the disagreement was blown out of proportion. “We had a laugh, and it was taken out of context,” he explained in an interview with Betfair. “Afterwards, Andre texted me to say he had an unbelievable time and really enjoyed it. He was supposed to join us for the final but ended up going into the Royal Box instead.”

Castle, a seasoned commentator who has covered tennis for the BBC since 2003, expressed his disappointment with how the media portrayed the incident, suggesting that it fueled unnecessary criticism. He clarified, “Andre was joking with me while smiling. During the final, I didn’t mention any celebrities at all. I only referenced the second row of the Royal Box, which featured former champions. Yet, some viewers claimed I only talked about celebrities. That’s simply not true—sometimes, people project their own perceptions onto a commentator’s voice.”
