BBC Three Announces Exciting Current Affairs Documentary Initiative

Fiona Campbell, the Controller of BBC iPlayer and BBC Three, revealed plans this morning at the Edinburgh TV Festival to commission five impactful current affairs documentaries from independent production companies. As part of a new initiative aimed at young adults, Campbell encouraged indie filmmakers to pitch their documentary ideas, which will be featured on both YouTube and BBC iPlayer.

“We are eager to discover five exceptional films from different indie creators that highlight compelling characters, unique voices, or perspectives that resonate with 16 to 34-year-olds in the UK,” Campbell stated. “We invite independent filmmakers to bring us ideas that delve into fascinating worlds, tell captivating stories, or present challenging viewpoints that reflect the pressing issues facing young people today.”

In an exciting announcement, Rialto has secured the rights for the theatrical release of the werewolf horror film ‘Dead Howling’ in Australia and New Zealand, distributed by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution. Directed by John Soto, this gripping tale follows Carter, a lone werewolf struggling to survive in a zombie-infested world. Driven by vengeance for his slain family, Carter hunts down the undead until he discovers a new purpose while protecting two humans seeking a rumored sanctuary for survivors. However, as they embark on their perilous journey together, they encounter an evolving undead threat that brings unimaginable danger.

Seriesly Berlin Unveils 16 Compelling Projects for Pitch Competitions

Seriesly Berlin has announced the selection of 16 innovative projects for its Co-Production Pitch and Writers’ Pitch competitions. Each competition will feature eight projects, with the Co-Pro Pitch showcasing works already in development and the Writers’ Pitch focusing on early-stage concepts. Notable entries include The Life Changers, a crime-thriller co-production between Taiwan and South Korea, created by Fu-Hsiang Hsu and producer Danielle Yen, featuring an international team of writers.

Other exciting projects include Birthright, a historical saga from Nigeria by Sundance Cultural Impact Fellow Kaelo Iyizoba, and The Last Baroness, a Slovakian project written by Biba Bohinská and produced by Berlinale Crystal Bear winner Katarína Krnáčová. The competition also highlights Tonight: Lola Blau, a musical drama from Germany, and Zebras, a Franco-German collaboration featuring co-writer Nicolas Ducray, known for his work on the award-winning film As Far As I Can Walk. Additional entries span various genres, including Italian-Danish horror comedy The People We Eat, Dutch documentary The Promise of India, and Nordic mystery romance Villa Hilda. Festival Director Dennis Ruh remarked, “These selected projects showcase the incredible diversity in today’s serialized storytelling landscape, with stories that span the globe and encompass a wide range of genres.”

MFF & Co Partners with Globo for Telenovela Adaptations

Los Angeles-based MFF & Co has announced a collaboration with Brazil’s Globo to adapt a variety of daytime and prime-time telenovelas for North American audiences. With operations in both Brazil and the U.S., MFF & Co will collaborate with American writers to bring these beloved stories to a new audience. Titles set for adaptation include the International Emmy-winning Empire (Império), the classic telenovela Belíssima by Silvio de Abreu, The Other Side of Paradise (O Outro Lado do Paraíso), and the thrilling melodrama All the Flowers (Todas as Flores) from acclaimed creator João Emanuel Carneiro. Miura Kite, President of Global Content at MFF & Co, is overseeing development. Kite previously served as Executive Vice President of Global Television at Participant, where she was an executive producer for notable projects like Hulu’s Interior Chinatown, Netflix’s Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, and BBC’s Noughts + Crosses.
