Mass Rally in Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami Demands Electoral Reform Ahead of 2024 Elections
Hundreds of thousands of supporters from Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party, gathered in the capital city of Dhaka to advocate for significant reforms to the electoral system. As the nation prepares for elections next year, following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the atmosphere in Bangladesh is charged with anticipation and demands for change.
During the rally, held on Saturday, Jamaat-e-Islami presented a comprehensive seven-point agenda to the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Their demands include ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections, achieving justice for past mass killings, implementing essential reforms, and enacting a charter that reflects the aspirations expressed during last year’s mass uprising. A key proposal from the party is the introduction of a proportional representation system in future elections.
The passionate supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami camped overnight at Dhaka University before marching to Suhrawardy Udyan, a historic site where the Pakistani army surrendered in 1971, marking the end of the nine-month Liberation War. Braving the sweltering heat, they made their way to the rally, demonstrating their commitment to the cause.
“We are fighting for a new Bangladesh, guided by Islamic principles, where integrity prevails, and corruption is eradicated,” declared Iqbal Hossain, a 40-year-old participant. “We are ready to sacrifice everything for this mission.”
The rally showcased vibrant displays of support, with many demonstrators wearing T-shirts and headbands emblazoned with the party’s logo, while others showcased metallic badges shaped like the party’s electoral symbol—a scale. Young supporters in their 20s and 30s made their presence felt, echoing the sentiments of unity and justice. “Under Jamaat-e-Islami, there will be no discrimination; everyone’s rights will be upheld because we adhere to the teachings of the Quran,” stated 20-year-old student Mohidul Morsalin Sayem. “If Islamist parties unite, no one will be able to seize power from us.”
Party leader Shafiqur Rahman emphasized that the struggle ahead in 2024 is not just against fascism but also a renewed battle against corruption and exploitation. “We are prepared for another fight to shape the future of Bangladesh,” he affirmed.
Historically, Jamaat-e-Islami faced significant challenges after Bangladesh’s independence, having initially sided with Pakistan during the Liberation War. The party was banned post-independence but made a comeback, achieving its best electoral performance in 1991 with 18 seats and participated in a coalition government in 2001. However, it struggled to maintain lasting support as political dynamics shifted.
Following the ousting of Prime Minister Hasina, who ruled from 2009 until her recent exile in India, many of Jamaat-e-Islami’s leaders faced severe repercussions, including executions and imprisonment on charges related to the 1971 war. Recently, the Supreme Court reinstated the party’s registration, enabling its participation in the upcoming elections scheduled for April.
In a swift response, Hasina’s Awami League party condemned the Yunus administration for permitting the rally, calling it a betrayal of the national spirit and an affront to the memories of those who fought against oppression in 1971. Meanwhile, Hasina remains in exile, facing serious charges of crimes against humanity.
