Luis Severino Speaks Out on Athletics’ Home Ballpark: Is a Trade on the Horizon?

Athletics pitcher Luis Severino isn’t holding back when it comes to sharing his thoughts about Sutter Health Park, the team’s current home field. As the MLB trade deadline approaches, it seems the Oakland Athletics are eager to part ways with Severino, who they signed to a three-year, $67 million deal in December—marking the largest guaranteed contract in franchise history.

After facing off against his former team, the New York Yankees, at Yankee Stadium over the weekend, Severino expressed his feelings about pitching in a minor league venue like Sutter Health Park. During a post-game interview, he candidly addressed a recent USA Today report that indicated the Athletics "can’t wait" to trade him.

"If you ask me how I feel pitching at home, I’m not going to lie to you," Severino stated, as reported by The Athletic. "At the end of the day, you guys will find out if I’m being honest or not. My job is to pitch, and I aim to be truthful with you every time you ask."

Severino went on to say that his teammates share similar sentiments about their home field, emphasizing, "I’m not the only one who feels this way." He previously remarked that pitching at Sutter Health Park feels more like a "spring training game" compared to the atmosphere of major league ballparks.

Reflecting on his experience, Severino expressed frustration about pitching at West Sacramento. "It’s really tough," he admitted. "Whether they trade me or not, I’m going to keep grinding and trying to be my best every time I step on the mound."

This season has been challenging for Severino, as he currently holds a 5.18 ERA over 18 starts, covering 104.1 innings, with a WHIP of 1.380. However, his performance improves significantly on the road, where he boasts a 3.23 ERA across eight starts, totaling 47.1 innings.

In contrast, his home outings have not been as favorable, yielding a 6.79 ERA with 43 earned runs in 57 innings over ten starts. The MLB trade deadline is set for July 31 at 6 p.m., giving the Athletics a month to explore trade options for Severino if they choose to move forward without him.
