Andy Murray Humorously Reflects on His ‘Diabolical’ Tennis at the Andy Murray Arena Opening
Andy Murray playfully apologized for his "diabolical" tennis skills as he kicked off the inaugural event at the newly named Andy Murray Arena at Queen’s Club. This moment marks a significant tribute, with the center court of the ATP 500 event being renamed in his honor following his retirement from professional tennis last summer.
This year is particularly special, as it is the first time Murray has not participated in the tournament he has cherished for years, although he made a brief appearance on Monday. Before any matches began, Murray was greeted with a guard of honor formed by ball kids as he walked onto the court, ready to test out the new stage.
During the event, Andy Murray shared the court with tournament director Laura Robson and two youth ambassadors, where he celebrated by winning both points in a friendly game. In his light-hearted chat with the audience, he humorously acknowledged his current tennis skills and expressed his enjoyment of life beyond competitive play.
"I’m thrilled to have the center court named after me at a tournament where I’ve experienced so many special moments,” Murray said. “This is where I won my first ATP Tour match, and it has always been my most successful event. I love returning here at the start of the British summer."
Murray conveyed his gratitude to those responsible for the court’s naming, saying, "I’m very proud of my results here, and I want to thank whoever made this decision, even if I don’t know their name."
He also reminisced about meeting Olga Morozova, the last tournament winner who coached him when he was younger. "It’s incredible that she won here 52 years ago," he noted. "This court has hosted many great matches, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for women to showcase their talents."
As he wrapped up his address, Murray joked, "You’re in for a treat with some fantastic matches ahead. Just a heads up—my tennis is a bit ‘diabolical’ these days, so I apologize for what you may witness, but I’ll give it my best shot!"
