Amazon Set to Implement Major Layoffs Impacting 30,000 Corporate Jobs
In a significant move, Amazon is gearing up for a substantial round of layoffs beginning Tuesday, which could affect up to 30,000 corporate positions, as reported by Reuters. The e-commerce and cloud services powerhouse, which oversees Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, is continuing to streamline its workforce after experiencing rapid growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.
These layoffs are expected to span multiple divisions and would account for approximately 10% of Amazon’s corporate workforce, which currently stands at around 350,000 employees. While the total global workforce exceeds 1.5 million—primarily consisting of warehouse staff—this latest round of cuts marks a notable shift for the company.
According to Reuters, this will be the largest layoff initiative at Amazon since late 2022 when around 27,000 jobs were eliminated. In preparation for the impending changes, managers are undergoing training to effectively communicate with their teams as notification emails are set to be sent out starting Tuesday morning.
Earlier this year, Amazon made headlines by reorganizing its audio divisions, resulting in the layoffs of over 100 employees and a significant reduction in the scope of its Wondery studio. Additionally, in January 2024, several hundred workers were let go from Prime Video and Amazon Studios during a comprehensive business review.
As of now, Amazon representatives have not provided comments regarding the latest developments. This news arrives as Amazon joins other interested parties in discussions surrounding the potential sale of Warner Bros. Discovery, which recently announced it is officially on the market.
