Alan Shearer Critiques Comparisons Between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alexander Isak Transfers
Legendary footballer Alan Shearer has firmly dismissed comparisons between Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure from Liverpool and the ongoing transfer saga of Alexander Isak at Newcastle United, labeling the discussion a "stupid question." This heated debate unfolded during an episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, hosted by Gary Lineker. A listener’s inquiry suggested that Shearer had a biased stance on the two situations due to his loyalty to Newcastle.
Without missing a beat, Shearer responded sharply, stating, "What a stupid question that is. You can’t compare them at all." He elaborated on his viewpoint, explaining that Alexander-Arnold, who grew up at Liverpool, reached the end of his contract without refusing to play or train. "He was well within his rights to leave," Shearer emphasized. In contrast, he pointed out that Isak still has three years left on his contract, making the situations distinctly different: "It doesn’t take a genius to work that out, does it? Come on."
Liverpool has already tested Newcastle’s resolve with a substantial £110 million bid for the Swedish striker, which was promptly rejected. Isak, 25, has expressed a desire to leave St James’ Park and has not participated in first-team training since pre-season commenced. This comes on the heels of a surprising moment for Liverpool fans, who were left shocked when homegrown talent Alexander-Arnold opted to run down his contract and join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Lineker noted that Liverpool fans may feel aggrieved by Alexander-Arnold’s departure, saying, "I think Liverpool fans’ problem is that he [Alexander-Arnold] is a Liverpool lad, and they feel like they didn’t get a monster transfer fee for him." While Liverpool did ultimately receive a fee of around £8–10 million from Real Madrid, the sentiment remains mixed.
Shearer maintained that the two narratives are not comparable. He pointed out that Alexander-Arnold honored his contract until the very end, while Isak’s situation involves him not participating in training despite having years left on his deal. Reflecting on his interactions with Isak earlier in the year, Shearer expressed surprise at the Swedish player’s current stance. "I sat down with him about five or six months ago. I didn’t see this in him, to be honest. I thought he was a manager’s dream," Shearer remarked. "Something has clearly upset him, but those two circumstances—Trent and Alexander Isak—are totally different."
As the summer transfer window continues, Isak’s future remains uncertain. Newcastle is holding firm, insisting their key player is not for sale, while Liverpool weighs the possibility of making an improved offer. Meanwhile, Newcastle is also pursuing plans to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, indicating they are preparing for a busy transfer season ahead.
