Two Pennsylvania State Troopers Critically Injured in Retail Theft Shooting Incident
In a concerning incident in Franklin County, two Pennsylvania state troopers are currently in critical condition after being shot while responding to a reported retail theft. The event took place around 6:10 p.m. at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store located in Guilford Township.
Upon receiving the call, state troopers quickly mobilized to the scene. However, the suspects fled in a vehicle towards Interstate 81, leading to a police pursuit. Authorities deployed spike strips, successfully stopping the vehicle near Exit 3, where it eventually came to a halt off the roadway.
Two female suspects exited the vehicle and were taken into custody without incident. However, a male suspect opened fire on the troopers, injuring two of them. In response, the troopers returned fire, fatally wounding the male suspect. Both injured troopers were then airlifted to Wellspan York Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his concern for the injured officers and urged the public to join him in prayer. "Lori and I are praying for the two state troopers shot in the line of duty in Chambersburg tonight," Shapiro shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. He emphasized the bravery of law enforcement, stating, "Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers are the very best of us — running towards danger every day to keep our communities safe."
Authorities confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public; however, the investigation remains active. The shooting occurred in southern Franklin County, approximately 85 miles northwest of Baltimore. The Pennsylvania State Police Museum in Hershey showcases the history of the first uniformed state police department in the nation.
The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association (PSTA) commended the bravery of the troopers and requested prayers for their recovery and their families. "Each day, the men and women of the Pennsylvania State Police go to work prepared to give their last full measure," the organization stated on X. "We can never thank them enough for their incredible bravery."
This tragic event adds to a troubling trend of violence against law enforcement in Pennsylvania. Just last month, three officers were tragically killed in an ambush while responding to a domestic call in York County. Additionally, another York County officer lost their life earlier this year during a shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital.
